Teisha Simmons named dean of the College of Indigenous Studies

The College of Indigenous Studies is pleased to announce the successful completion of the recruitment process for its new dean. After an extensive search and recruitment process, Teisha Simmons has been selected to lead the college effective May 18, 2025.
Simmons, whose Denaakk'e name is Naggakk'o, is from the communities of Galena, Koyukuk, and Huslia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in clinical-community psychology. With a career spanning over 20 years, Simmons has demonstrated leadership in a variety of senior management roles. She previously oversaw the University of Alaska Fairbanks Interior Alaska Campus, worked as an assistant professor in the human services program, and directed projects within the psychology department.
“We are delighted to welcome Teisha to the College of Indigenous Studies as the permanent dean,” said Charlene Stern, vice chancellor for rural, community and Native education. “Her demonstrated experience in strategic leadership, academic planning, budget management, and strategic enrollment planning make her the ideal candidate to lead the college forward.”
Stern also shared, “We are now turning our attention to the recruitment of a permanent Dean for the UAF Community and Technical College. This search will commence in the fall of 2025, and we are committed to finding a leader who will continue to advance the college's mission and support our students, faculty, staff, and community.”
