Welcome to the Institute of Arctic Biology

Since 1963, the Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) has advanced research and education focused on high-latitude biological systems. Founded by renowned physiologist Laurence Irving, IAB continues his legacy through pioneering studies in wildlife biology, physiology, ecology, genetics, biomedicine, and more.

Our faculty and researchers lead innovative programs across Alaska and the Arctic, supported by exceptional platforms like Toolik Field Station, core research labs, and collaborative centers including the Center for Alaska Native Health Â鶹¹ÙÍø and the Alaska Geobotany Center.

IAB also plays a vital role in education at UAF, delivering the undergraduate biology and wildlife curriculum, mentoring over 150 graduate students, and offering students hands-on research opportunities in the lab and field.

We invite you to explore our research, meet our scientists, and attend our weekly Life Science Seminar Series and annual Irving-Scholander Memorial Lecture.

Thank you for visiting.
