Full Time Position (1.0 FTE)
The Juneau School District, located in Southeast Alaska, is accepting applications
for the Chief Financial Officer position. The Juneau School District offers a wide
and varied educational program to students in preschool through grade twelve. Enrollment
is approximately 4,000 students with 700 employees.
SUMMARY: The Chief Financial Officer serves as the district's chief financial strategist and
principal advisor to the Superintendent and Board of Education on all fiscal and operational
matters. The CFO leads the district's financial planning efforts, including annual
budget development, long-range fiscal sustainability planning, capital planning, contract
management, and financial compliance. The position provides leadership and oversight
for Finance, Payroll, and Food Service operations while ensuring responsible stewardship
of public resources in support of student success. The CFO regularly communicates
financial information and recommendations to the School Board, municipal partners,
employee associations, and the broader community.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, or a related field.
- Experience in school district business management or related work experience with schools.
- At least three years of progressive supervisory experience.
- Knowledge and training in best practices in budgeting and administration.
- Experience in labor relations and contract negotiations.
- Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, financial analysis, research, problem solving, and critical thinking.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, educational leadership, or a related field.
- Knowledge of legislative changes affecting school districts.
- Desire to work as part of a progressive, innovative management team.
- Demonstrated experience in budget development, financial forecasting, and public communication of fiscal plans.
- Experience with enterprise financial management systems such as Infinite Visions or similar ERP solutions and proficiency with financial reporting and data visualization tools.
- Knowledge of student transportation administration and school nutrition programs.
- Knowledge of Alaska's Foundation Formula, state and federal education funding streams, and municipal contribution requirements.
- Familiarity with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development reporting requirements and compliance processes.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences including staff, community members, elected officials, and governing boards.
- Certification as a School Business Official (SBO), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO), or similar credential preferred.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Member of the Superintendent's cabinet, providing resources and knowledge to the administration of the district.
- District budget preparation, forecasting and long-term planning.
- Liaison to the City and Borough of Juneau Finance & Engineering Departments
- Issues RFPs on the district's behalf.
- Member of the Labor Relations team during teacher/classified/administrator negotiations
- Member of school board Finance Committee.
- Administers major contracts and procurement activities, including transportation, food service, and other operational services.
- Oversee internal financial controls, audit preparation, risk management practices, and compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Compensation:
